My name is Matthew Major.
I am an emerging artist.
I am nearly complete with my B.F.A. in painting at the University of Florida.
I work mainly in medium to large scales and a variety of media.
Much of my larger work consists of oil paintings on canvas, but I've been known to work in acrylic and encaustic.
My work consists of cellular and medical imagery with an emphasis on the pancreas.
For this reason I've dubbed myself a Physiological Expressionist painter.
The above statement was written by the artist in mid-year, 2011.
He completed his BFA in painting (with a minor in Art History)at the University of Florida, graduating in December of that year.
This was following his graduation in 2009 with an Associate's Degree in Art from Santa Fe College, also in Gainesville, Florida.
On February 12, 2012, Matthew Major passed from this earth. He was 27 years old.
He succumbed to the diabetes that had impacted his life since the tender age of 13 months.
Matt is gone, but his work lives on.
Matt came to his interest in physiology because of his illness.
He may have come to his deep compassion for other people from the same source.
At any rate, as his brother Ryan said of him, "His childhood scourge became his muse."
Matt used his interest in the human body to energize his artistic vision, creating a world of what he often referred to as "microscopic landscapes."
Those who spend time peering through the lens of a microscope will no doubt recognize many of the features that populate the world of his vision.
Matt is survived by his parents and his three brothers, one sister-in-law and a nephew and namesake he never got to meet.
His memory is cherished and his work appreciated.
In months to come, more of Matt's artwork will be displayed upon this page.
We hope that many people will come to enjoy his unique view of our universe, micro and macro.

I added some pages to the website today: "Other Works", "Just Us comic strip", and 'Portfolio".
The first is a collection of earlier paintings, drawings, and sculptures.
The second is the strip that Chronos, Matt, and Mike worked on together in 2003-4, some of which were published in the Independent Florida Alligator.
The third is the portfolio Matt was working on in order to apply for an MA program in sculpture.
